There is no doubt that Podcasts have become an effective way of online communication. There are so many options available for listeners to choose from. For the purposes of this blog, I would be looking at this Mastery Podcast by Mark Coles. I listened to the episode 169 which focused on "How to write professional emails".

Why are professional emails important?

Emails are an important part of digital communication these days. As we learned in week 4, "responding to emails is a necessity in the business world, but taking the time to type out a thoughtful, polite reply to each one can eat up a good chunk of your day" (Freedman). When we are writing replies emails, whether in academic setting or business setting, it becomes really important that we follow a professional tone to deliver our message. In this podcast, Mark discusses about the importance of professional emails. After some marketing of his new book, he talks about the importance of tone of the email by saying, "if you're going to send an email to somebody, one of the first things that I would like you to think about, is how do you want that person to feel when they receive your email?" (Coles, 2020). He then explains that the tone should directly coincide with the way we want the receiving person to feel.

In this podcast as well as the article we read in week 4, there were a lot of similarities. Both focused on the do's and don'ts of writing a professional email. We need to start with a proper salutation, proofreading, including some introduction and maintaining a professional and polite tone.

Some of the common don'ts included avoiding buzzwords, missing punctuation, using rude tone. Avoid copying-pasting different font types or sizes. Mark even recommended using Grammarly to avoid any grammatical or punctuation errors.

This podcast directly relates with the concepts of online communication that we have been learning in this class. As mentioned above as well, writing emails in an important part of online communication and to be a competent communicator, one needs to know how to write professional emails.
